THE KEY PROBLEMS BETWEEN RUSSIA AND BRITAIN RELATIONSHIP, MY OPINION!
There are four main stumbling blocks in Russian-British relations.
First, the British nuclear arsenal is included in the U.S. nuclear planning system. All four British nuclear submarines are equipped with American made Trident II ballistic missiles. London also does not participate in the Washington Treaty (1987) on intermediate- and shorter-range missiles. Theoretically, the United States can bypass the START treaty’s limits and resume the production of medium-range missiles in a joint program with Britain. Therefore, Moscow believes that Britain undermines the arms control regime between the United States and Russia.
Second, the United States views direct contacts between Russia and Western Europe with suspicion. The United States is quite concerned about Russia’s “common European initiatives.” Washington fears that Moscow is trying to undermine the military framework of NATO and the American presence in Europe, and so the United States tasked its key ally, Britain, with torpedoing the Russian initiatives. Is it simply a coincidence that London was highly critical of the Russian draft treaty on European security (November 2009) and its Euro-Atlantic security initiatives (April 2010)?
Third, since the Cold War, American and British diplomats have had a special division of labor. Washington has conducted arms control negotiations with the Soviet Union and then Russia. And Britain was responsible for fostering a negative perception of Soviet (and later Russian) actions. Naturally, this is why the British media depicts Russia in a largely negative light.
Fourth, British business has some complaints against Russia as well. Since 1986, the volume of hydrocarbons produced in the North Sea has been dropping, so EU countries began looking for other sources of energy, including Russian oil and gas. In comparison with the success of German companies, British investments in Russia’s energy sector are unimpressive.
Who will reset the button? big question that seek answer!
To sum up, Russia and Britain could begin a constructive dialogue. Russia is likely to persuade London to be more lenient on its European security initiatives, whereas Britain would probably like to improve cooperation with Russia on energy. However, the scale of this dialogue is limited. For the foreseeable future, the relationship between Russia and Britain will remain challenging.
